The Backwards Web
MOVIE BEGINS
Todd Sleet sits behind his desk, a newspaper opened in front of him.
He looks like he is just starting to doze off when the phone beeps through.
Voice of the receptionist
“Mr. Sleet, you have a phone call.”
Todd opens his eyes, folding the newspaper and putting it on his desk.
He grabs the telephone and hits the button for the call.
Todd
“Sleet, go ahead.”
He listens, a smile growing on his face as he does.
Todd
“Great, great. Make the deal official.”
Todd hangs up the phone and opens the laptop computer sitting on his desk.
He types in a few words and closes it back. He stands up, grabbing a brief
case from beside his desk and walking through the door.
Todd
“Redirect any important calls to my cell.
Any others, just take a message.”
Todd walks out of the office into the hallway. He presses the down
button for the elevator, waiting as it opens. He steps inside, pushing
the button for the lobby. The door closes and the elevator begins to go
down. It hits the ground floor and the door opens again. Todd exits the
elevator, quickly walking to the glass doors that lead outside. He
pushes out and climbs into the waiting limousine. The driver shuts
the door behind him.
SCENE CHANGE
Scotty Trice is leaning back on his couch, a cigar is held in one hand.
The phone rings and he lifts it up, pressing the button and holding it
to his ear.
Scotty
“Go ahead.”
He sits up as he listens, placing the cigar in an ash-tray on the table.
Scotty
“He bought them out?”
He nods along as the other person on the phone speaks.
Scotty
“Perfect. Time to get to work. You know what
to do.”
He presses the button on the phone, ending the call. He lifts the
cigar, taking a puff and laughing as he leans back on the couch.
SCENE CHANGE
Inside a small café, the phone begins to ring. The clerk at the
counter answers it.
Clerk
“Tyme Café, how may I help you?”
On the other end of the line is Gyn, a hired hit man who works for
Trice.
Gyn
“Boom.”
Clerk
“Boom? Wha.”
The windows of the café explode, sending glass flying into the street.
Flames follow, grasping out into the air. A quick explosion has
demolished the inside of the café.
SCENE CHANGE
In the back of the limousine, Todd Sleet’s cell phone rings. He flips
it open and presses the button.
Todd
“Sleet, go ahead.”
Todd Sleet suddenly throws the phone at the seat in front of him.
He then rolls down the window divider between the front and back of the
limousine.
Todd
“Damn it, go to the café, now.”
The driver nods his head and signals for a turn. Sleet presses the
button for the window and it closes again. His face has a look of
anger on it as he shakes his head.
SCENE CHANGE
Todd Sleet is now standing outside of the yellow police tape that
surrounds the café entrance. He is yelling at an officer.
Todd
“I own this building! You’re telling me I
can’t go inside?”
Officer
“It’s a crime scene. No one can enter unless
they have a badge.”
Sleet looks like he wants to hit the cop, but instead turns away
and swings at the air.
Todd
“This is bullshit. Someone blew up my business
and I can’t even get any information on it.”
He opens the door to his limousine, climbing back inside. He slams it shut
after he is in and then picks up his phone. He hits a button on the phone.
Todd
“Tyme just got attacked. Figure out who did it and
why.”
Todd starts to hang up, but puts the phone back to his ear.
Todd
“You know who did it already?..Because I bought out
Purose?”
Todd shakes his head.
Todd
“Lavers, get in touch wi..in jail? Why?”
Todd smirks at the reply.
Todd
“Get him out, I need to use him. Make him think
he owes me for getting him out. I’ve got someone
else I need to get in touch with.”
Todd hangs up the phone and rolls the divider down enough to speak.
Todd
“Rithers, fast.”
The divider once again closes. Sleet sits back in his seat, picking
up a glass of champagne from a tray. He takes a drink and waits to arrive.
SCENE CHANGE
Sleet’s limousine pulls up to the curb outside of a bar. The door opens
and Todd Sleet steps out. He pushes the door to the bar open and walks
inside. It doesn’t look like a place he would normally go. A few bikers
are sitting around the bar. A pool table is in the center of the room.
Sleet ignores all of this, walking to the back of the bar. A group of men
sit around a table.
Man
“Look out.”
Kyle Rithers turns just in time to see Sleet reaching out for him. Todd
grabs him by the hair and yanks him up from the booth.
Todd
“We’ve got some business to take care of.”
Todd pulls Rithers from the bar by his hair. On the sidewalk, he pushes
him backwards against the wall.
Todd
“You owe me big, and now I’m calling in just a
small portion of what you owe me.”
Kyle
“Hey, Todd! No problem man. Anything I can do to
help, and I mean anything.”
Kyle laughs, obviously a little nervous. His eyes dart back and forth down
the street.
Kyle
“You know I’m getting the money together. I’m sure
I’ll be able to pay you at the first of next month.”
Todd
“You’ll never be able to pay me what you owe me.
Especially when you sit around in dumps like this.
Right now, none of that matters. I need some
information, so hop in.”
Kyle opens the door of the limousine. He sighs, looking around once again
before climbing into the car. Sleet has pulled out a cigarette, lighting
it before climbing in afterwards. He rolls the divider down.
Todd
“Drive around for a bit, then stop back by here.”
The window goes back up and Todd turns to look at Kyle. Kyle as a fake smile
on his face.
Kyle
“So, uh, what do you need pal? Anything I know I’ll
tell you.”
Todd
“By now, you may have heard what happened just a while
ago. One of my establishments was a target. Someone
decided they wanted to redecorate. Any idea who could
be behind it?”
Kyle
“Todd, you know I keep to myself. I don’t know who
could’ve done anything to your place.”
Todd jams the cigarette onto the hand of Kyle, who winces.
Kyle
“Ahh..Alright, alright! There’s some guy named
Gyn, he’s behind it, okay? I don’t know who he works
for. I just know when whoever it is wants someone out
of the way, Gyn is the answer to the problem!”
Todd removes the cigarette from the skin of Kyle.
Todd
“Good, good. Now, how come it took you that long to
talk? Usually you answer anything I want answered
without pressure.”
Kyle
“I want to stay alive. I may owe you money, but at
least I’ll be alive when I’m doing it. I open my mouth
about certain things I could end up floating in the
bottom of a river somewhere.”
Todd
“I’d be more worried about paying me what you owe me.
Find out everything you can by tomorrow. I’ll be back
to pick you up once I talk with a new business partner.
I’m getting revenge for this, and you two are going to help me.”
Todd motions towards the door. Kyle opens it and climbs out. He looks inside.
Kyle
“I’m sure I’ll find out something.”
Todd
“You’d better.”
Todd pulls the door closed and the limousine pulls away from the curb.
SCENE CHANGE
Back inside the home of Scotty Trice, Gyn is sitting in a leather recliner.
The television is on and he’s watching the news report about an explosion at
a café earlier in the day.
Gyn
“Terrible that these things happen in such a great
city.”
He laughs, clicking the button on the remote control. Scotty Trice enters
the room, a cigar in his hand.
Scotty
“Gyn, heard about the job earlier. Great work.”
Gyn shrugs.
Gyn
“Nothing at all, really. Heard some things, though.
He’s looking for who did it.”
Scotty chuckles, inhaling on his cigar.
Scotty Trice
“Big deal. Let him find me, and I’ll crush him like
I’ve crushed everyone else.”
Trice sits down on the couch, putting his glass on the table.
Gyn
“He’s going to go for it soon.”
SCENE CHANGE
Todd Sleet is now in his living room. Another man stands in front of him.
His hair is just starting to turn gray, and he looks like he’s seen better
days.
Todd
“The way I see it, Chuck, you owe me big time. If
it wasn’t for me, you’d be sitting in jail for another
ten years or so. I got you out, so you owe me.”
Chuck Lavers
“Well, uh, Mr. Sleet. I’m not sure how I can pay you.
I don’t have anything left. Everything got taken when
I was put in jail.”
Todd Sleet laughs, shaking his head.
Todd
“Don’t be stupid. I don’t need your money. What I do
need is for you to do a few things for me. I’ve got
an address, and I need information.”
Todd hands Chuck a slip of paper.
Todd
“Go there, and find anything you can. About who his
boss is, and what he wants from my company. If it
leads you someplace else, go there and do it again.”
Chuck’s hand is shaky as he takes the paper. He uses his free hand to wipe
sweat from his forehead.
Chuck
“Todd, I appreciate you helping me get out of jail.
I don’t want to end up back there, though.”
Todd
“If you get caught, jail is the very least of your
worries. Meet me back here in a few days. You start
tonight.”
Todd grins and pats Chuck on the shoulder, pointing towards the door.
Chuck exits quickly as Todd walks through his house. He ends up
outside, now behind his house. A large pool is lit up, and a smaller hot
tub bubbles beside it. Todd removes his robe, stepping down into the water.
Todd
“This belongs to me, anything I want I take.
Someone thinks because they blow up one shop, that
I’m going to back down. They’re crazy.”
SCENE CHANGE
Chuck Lavers is crouched outside of an apartment door. He is fiddling with
the knob on the door, and after a few seconds it turns freely. He stands back
up, opening the door and walking inside. He is met with the barrel of a
pistol against his skin. Gyn pulls him inside and shuts the door.
Gyn
“You’re certainly losing your touch, hm? Busted for
burglary, and now look at you. A gun at your head.
Let me guess, you’re here for Sleet, right?”
Lavers is starring at the barrel right over his eyes.
Chuck
“I..he wants information.”
Gyn
“Information? Ah, I’m guessing he wants to know
who is behind the fireworks show, yes? Funny, that.
I have someone who would like to speak with you.”
Gyn clubs Chuck in the head with the butt of his gun. Lavers crumples to the
ground, unconscious.
SCENE CHANGE
Lavers wakes up inside a small, empty room. He is laying on the floor, a
thread of blood on his head. He sits up, groaning in pain as he holds his
head. The door opens and Scotty Trice walks in. He stands, looking down at
Chuck Lavers.
Scotty
“Chucky, good buddy. Nice to see you decided to wake
up from your little nap. A friend told me you were
looking for some information. I have everything you
want, and need, to know.”
Chuck looks up at the man standing above him, still blurry from the blow to
his head.
Scotty
“Tell your new friend Todd that someone is indeed a
bit miffed at him. He seems to think he is on top of
the world, but I plan to change that. You, dear Chuck, are
going to help me. Not only will you get your freedom
from the jails, but once we’re finished you can walk
away free and clear from anyone who thinks you owe them.
You can live your life. I’ll allow this..do you think
Sleet will?”
Chuck
“Uuhh...He’s the one that got me out of jail. I
can’t just disappear.”
Scotty
“You aren’t going to just disappear. You’re going
to do the job you’re supposed to do until I say otherwise.
When you get back with Sleet, tell him you found out who
is after him, and why. He’s arrogant, and he thinks
because someone left him an empire he can take over
the empires other people have worked for. I built my
wealth from the ground up, and I’m not going to just
hand it to anyone without being killed for it.”
Scotty turns away from Chuck, who is still dazed. He walks out, leaving the
door open. After a moment, Chuck staggers to his feet and from the room.
SCENE CHANGE
Chuck Lavers is standing at the front door of Todd Sleet’s home.
He knocks, waiting for a response. After about four more knocks, the door
opens and Todd is standing there.
Chuck
“I know who did it.”
Todd raises his eyebrows, stepping away from the door. Chuck walks in and
Todd closes the door behind him.
Todd
“Who?”
Chuck
“The one that blew up your building, well. I don’t
know his real name. I’ve only heard him referred to as
Gyn. The one behind it is Scotty Trice. Trice Enterprise
is his business. I guess you could say it’s the competition.”
Todd
“Scotty Trice? He wants to mess with me?”
Chuck
“Apparently, you bought out a business he was looking
into acquiring.”
Todd
“How did you get this information, Chuck?”
Chuck shrugs his shoulders.
Chuck
“There were some letters in the guys apartment between
the two. He isn’t finished yet. He plans to do more
damage.”
Todd
“Come on, we’re going for a ride.”
Todd opens the door, walking out quickly. Chuck follows, shutting the
door behind him.
SCENE CHANGE
The limousine once again pulls up outside the bar. This time, Kyle is waiting
on the curb. Todd climbs out first, followed by Chuck.
Kyle
“Hey, Todd! I got some news. Trice tried to get me under
his wing, but I’m loyal man, you know that. He said he
could make my troubles disappear but I told him no, I’d
rather keep my word and owe someone.”
Todd
“Shut up, Kyle. What’ve you heard about any planned
attacks?”
Kyle looks nervously at Chuck, then back at Todd.
Kyle
“Attacks? I don’t know anything about any attacks. You
know if I did I’d tell you first, man.”
Kyle is pacing back and forth on the side walk.
Kyle
“I just know he’s out to get you..”
The door of the bar swings open and three large men step out. Kyle stops
pacing, looking between Todd, Chuck, and the three men.
Kyle
“Sorry, Todd. I got in too deep, I had to get a way out.”
The three men rush towards both standing beside the limousine. One takes
out Chuck, crushing him into the side of the car and punching him three
quick times, dropping him to the ground. All three then surround Todd
Sleet, punching him down to the ground. As he lays on the ground, the three
back away and Kyle stands over him.
Kyle
“You’re a greedy bastard, and I had no way of getting
your money. I’m not going to spend my life in service
to you, so I found a better deal. Just bow out, you can’t
beat him Todd. Take your money and get out while you can.”
Kyle lands a few kicks into the ribs of Todd Sleet before turning and walking
down the side walk.
Sleet struggles to pull himself up against the car, spitting blood onto the
ground. Chuck is also just starting to stir on the ground, wiping blood away
from his nose as he leans back against the car.
SCENE CHANGE
Kyle Rithers is now standing in Scotty Trice’s home. Gyn is sitting on the
couch, reading the newspaper. Trice himself is standing on a treadmill.
Scotty
“Sounds like you did a good job, Kyle.”
Kyle
“Yeah, I think he got the picture.”
Scotty
“No, that’s not the point of it. Getting the picture
isn’t enough. He caused trouble for me, and I want him
gone.”
Kyle shakes his head.
Kyle
“Come on Scotty..I didn’t sign on to kill anyone. I
just wanted out of what I was in, to be clean again.
Scotty
“You’ve got no choice. You do what you’re told or you
end up just like Sleet will.”
Gyn pulls a thin knife from the sleeve of his coat.
Gyn
“No problem, Scotty. Me and my new partner here will
take care of any situation that comes up. Right, Kyle?”
Kyle
“Uhm..yeah, right..”
SCENE CHANGE
Inside Todd’s office, Chuck Lavers and Todd Sleet are talking. Chuck has a
bandage over his forehead, while Todd appears to be letting his cuts heal
on their own.
Todd
“You know where he’ll be tonight, right?”
Chuck
“Yeah, but Todd..maybe we shouldn’t go.”
Todd
“Oh, we’re going. I’m going to bury that asshole.”
Todd pulls a gun from his drawer, sliding it into his jacket. He looks at
Chuck and motions for him to exit. Chuck does and Todd follows, slamming the
door behind him.
SCENE CHANGE
Inside a dimly lit restaurant Scotty Trice, Gyn, and Kyle Rithers are
sitting around a table. Light music plays in the background. All three have
just finished eating their meals and the waiter takes the plates away. As he
walks away, Todd Sleet slides past him, grabbing Kyle Rithers by the hair. He
quickly picks up the vase that is holding a group of flowers and smashes it
into his face.
Todd
“Guess I’m late for lunch.”
Trice jumps up from the table quickly. Gyn sits and watches with an amused
look on his face. Behind Sleet, Chuck is standing in place, looking around.
Rithers has fallen to the floor, grasping at his face to remove the fragments
of glass.
Scotty Trice
“You bastard, you’re going to leave out of here in a
bag!”
Trice takes a swing at Todd, but he easily dodges. He drives his fist into the
side of Scotty Trice and then another into his face. Trice falls backwards over
his chair. Sleet reaches into his jacket and pulls out his gun, pointing it down
at Scotty.
Todd
“I’ll kill you right here.”
He is cut short of actually pulling the trigger by Chuck, who drops Kyle’s
chair across his back. Todd crashes through the table, forcing Gyn to now
stand. He pulls out a gun of his own, firing a shot into the air.
Gyn
“Why don’t all of you just hold it for one fucking
minute!”
He kicks his way past the wreckage of the table and now stands in the center
of the restaurant.
Gyn
“You’re doing this in the middle of a crowd, you bunch of
dip-shits. There’s at least thirty witnesses watching you.”
Gyn shakes his head, turning and looking at Chuck. The back of the chair is
still in his hands. He looks surprised that he actually hit Sleet.
Gyn
“You clumsy whore.”
One quick movement puts a bullet into the forehead of Lavers, sending him
backwards into a table occupied by an elderly couple. Scotty Trice pulls himself
up to his feet.
Scotty
“What the hell are you doing?! He was working for us!”
Gyn whips Trice with his pistol, sending him back to the floor.
Gyn
“He was working for you, and now he’s dead like everyone
else who works for you is going to be. You think I give a
damn about you?”
Sleet has regained himself now and is bashing Kyle’s face into the floor
repeatedly.
Todd
“Scotty, you think you’re the only one that can make
people turn on their friends? You stupid prick.”
Gyn points the gun at the leg of Trice, pulling the trigger three times.
Scotty screams in pain and clutches at his leg.
Gyn
“Good times, Scotty. People have to move on, though.
I’ve made more than enough money to keep myself happy, and
I’ve got your business to run now. At least I will in
about three minutes, when you’re nothing but a smear of
blood on the back wall.”
Sleet gets back to his feet, wiping the blood from his hands. He pushes past
the fallen tables and spits on the body of Lavers as he steps over it.
Todd
“Let’s go.”
Gyn walks away, leaving Trice to crawl after him.
Gyn
“Now you get to see what the people in the café felt like, Scotty.”
Gyn walks through the door behind Todd Sleet. They turn, walking down the sidewalk
to a clear area.
Gyn
“Boom.”
Gyn pushes a remote and the windows of the restaurant explode outwards, followed
by a blast of flames. The people on the street are knocked to the ground from
the force of the explosion. Gyn looks over his shoulder, grinning.
Gyn
“Looks like you finally got to take out the main
competition.”
Todd
“It’s about time.”
The two continue to walk down the street, ignoring the crowd that rushes
towards the flaming building. Sirens are heard in the distance as emergency
crews arrive to put out the flames.
THE END
